Material properties are found in section 3 of the corresponding Eurocode for each material.
Values provided in the standard regarding strength are nominal and must be divided by the appropriate safety factor in order to obtain the design value to be used in calculations.
Steel
Design values of material properties of structural steel to be used in calculations according to EN1993-1-1:2005 section 3.2.6
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Modulus of elasticity | = 210 000 N / mm² |
| Shear modulus | G = ≈ 81 000 N / mm² |
| Poisson’s ratio in elastic stage | ν = 0,3 |
| Coefficient of linear thermal expansion | α = 12 × 10-6 perK (for T ≤ 100 °C) |
| Density * | ρ = 7850 kgr / m3 |
| Weight per m3 * | γ = 78,5 kN / m3 |
*Not included in 3.2.6. The actual value varies, these (maximum) values are used in practice as design values.
For calculating the structural effects of unequal temperatures in composite concrete-steel structures to EN 1994 the coefficient of linear thermal expansion is taken as = 10×10-6
